The shunt is fitted in-line with the leisure/house battery's negative cable, the starter/auxiliary battery's negative cable is connected to the shunt's output and fused +ve supplies are taken from each battery into the shunt's 2 inputs. Once the battery monitor is panel-mounted in a suitable location (with or without the supplied square bezel) it is connected to the shunt's PCB using a single RJ12 data/power cable and programmed using the on-board menu.
Built-in Bluetooth allows you to display many of the monitor' features via any Android or Apple device or laptop and most settings of the monitor can be configured with the VictronConnect app
As an alternative to monitoring the voltage of a 2nd battery the BMV-712 shunt's 2nd/auxiliary input can be used for the following:
Temperature monitoring of a single battery/bank using an optional temperature sensor. Battery capacity reduces as temperature increases so the sensor measurement can be fed into the monitor to adjust displayed capacity based on temperature.
Mid-point voltage monitoring of one bank of batteries connected in series (or banks of series-connected batteries joined in parallel). This allows detection of a bad cell or a bad battery which can potentially destroy the other connected batteries by over-charging. The voltages either side of the mid-point are compared and the deviation displayed in % and V, with a programmable alarm providing a warning that the deviation is too great.

The Merlin SmartGauge Battery Monitor is the most accurate battery monitor currently available today.
Conventional battery monitors use a Current Measurement Shunt to ‘count’ amp-hours in/out of a battery. The problem is that an amp hour changes according to temperature, discharge rate, charge rate, and condition of the batteries. This means that conventional monitors run out of synchronisation and after a time can display misleading information.
The Merlin SmartGauge uses a completely different type of monitoring method. Real-Time battery measurements and proprietary algorithms coupled to computerised battery models allow SmartGauge to always provide real-time battery % of charge remaining AND will never run out of synchronisation with the battery. What’s more, installation is easier and SmartGauge can be easily used and understood by all crew members.
In recent independent tests by leading battery manufacturer, Enersys, The Merlin SmartGauge was found to be more accurate than conventional battery monitors.
The Merlin SmartGauge displays the battery voltage for your domestic battery bank and % remaining. Conventional monitors always show % remaining of theoretical capacity when the battery is new – not actual. Bearing in mind that batteries lose around 10% of capacity per year, this means that inherent inaccuracies grow. SmartGauge displays real-time capacity remaining so you are never surprised by running out of power early.
The Merlin SmartGauge will also display the battery voltage for your engine battery. It is fitted with a high/low voltage alarm for each battery and a low % remaining alarm. A volt-free contact on the rear of SmartGauge allows you to trigger external alarms, auto generator start, etc.

This Victron 1000A VS series SmartShunt uses a high-precision battery shunt designed to expertly measure vital charging and performance data for your batteries. This smart model features additional advanced functions such as Bluetooth communication ability, a secondary input for optional monitoring of an auxiliary battery bank, and an extremely low current draw from the battery bank (0.7Ah per month for a 12V system). Statistics such as battery voltage, charge / discharge current as energy flows in to and out of the battery, Amp Hours consumed, state of charge and time-to-go can be viewed and the settings can be programmed using the inbuilt Bluetooth via any Bluetooth-enabled mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet.
Battery data
The SmartShunt measures the vital parameters relating to the battery condition and the energy it receives / provides, and transmits this information via Bluetooth, where it can be viewed by the user (and where some settings can be amended if necessary). This information includes:
Battery voltage: Displayed for the main battery / battery bank, and also for an optional auxiliary battery which can be connected via the secondary input.
Battery midpoint voltage monitoring: For battery banks constructed of several individual batteries, the SmartShunt is able to maintain balance by taking the voltage measurements from the midpoint within the bank, and if the voltage deviates from this point of balance, an alarm will be generated. For such battery banks, the voltage value is also displayed for the battery bank as a whole, and additionally, for the 'top section' and 'bottom section' (i.e. 1st half and 2nd half) of the battery bank.
Battery state of charge: Indicated as a percentage value from 0-100%.
Battery charging / discharging current and power: The current (A) and power (W) flowing out of the battery (load consumption) are displayed as negative values, while the current and power flowing into the battery are displayed as positive values.
Battery temperature: The SmartShunt can be connected to an optional Victron battery temperature sensor (sold separately). This temperature measurement can be used to adjust available battery capacity as the temperature varies. An alarm will be activated when battery temperature falls outside of the safe range.
Amp hours consumed: For example, if 12A is drawn from a fully charged battery during a period of 3 hours, the app will show -36.0Ah consumed by the battery.
Time-to-go: The SmartShunt is able to estimate the approximate length of time that the battery will continue to support the current load, before the battery requires re-charging.
An in-depth data log also records historical data to enable the user to evaluate usage patterns and determine overall battery health. This includes values such as the highest/ lowest recorded voltages (for the main battery and auxiliary battery), deepest recorded discharge, time since last full discharge, cumulative Amp hours drawn, time since last full charge, total energy charged/discharged and many more.
Customisation
The user can set high/low thresholds for battery voltage (either battery), battery state of charge (main battery) or the battery temperature (additional sensor required). If any of the above parameters fall outside of this specified range, the battery shunt will activate an alarm on the connected mobile app.
Advanced communication
This smart battery shunt features inbuilt Bluetooth, enabling the user to wirelessly connect their mobile device to the monitor. Then, using the Victron Connect App on a smartphone or tablet, you will unlock numerous possibilities for advanced programming and remote monitoring of your battery system. A wide range of features are made available, including real-time data transmission, as well as the option to amend battery storage information, program alarms, and set up or join an existing VE.Smart network. Alternatively, the VE Direct USB Cable can be used to establish a connection to a non-Bluetooth-enabled PC/laptop.

This Victron 2000A VS series SmartShunt uses a high-precision battery shunt designed to expertly measure vital charging and performance data for your batteries. This smart model features additional advanced functions such as Bluetooth communication ability, a secondary input for optional monitoring of an auxiliary battery bank, and an extremely low current draw from the battery bank (0.7Ah per month for a 12V system). Statistics such as battery voltage, charge / discharge current as energy flows in to and out of the battery, Amp Hours consumed, state of charge and time-to-go can be viewed and the settings can be programmed using the inbuilt Bluetooth via any Bluetooth-enabled mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet.
Battery data
The SmartShunt measures the vital parameters relating to the battery condition and the energy it receives / provides, and transmits this information via Bluetooth, where it can be viewed by the user (and where some settings can be amended if necessary). This information includes:
Battery voltage: Displayed for the main battery / battery bank, and also for an optional auxiliary battery which can be connected via the secondary input.
Battery midpoint voltage monitoring: For battery banks constructed of several individual batteries, the SmartShunt is able to maintain balance by taking the voltage measurements from the midpoint within the bank, and if the voltage deviates from this point of balance, an alarm will be generated. For such battery banks, the voltage value is also displayed for the battery bank as a whole, and additionally, for the 'top section' and 'bottom section' (i.e. 1st half and 2nd half) of the battery bank.
Battery state of charge: Indicated as a percentage value from 0-100%.
Battery charging / discharging current and power: The current (A) and power (W) flowing out of the battery (load consumption) are displayed as negative values, while the current and power flowing into the battery are displayed as positive values.
Battery temperature: The SmartShunt can be connected to an optional Victron battery temperature sensor (sold separately). This temperature measurement can be used to adjust available battery capacity as the temperature varies. An alarm will be activated when battery temperature falls outside of the safe range.
Amp hours consumed: For example, if 12A is drawn from a fully charged battery during a period of 3 hours, the app will show -36.0Ah consumed by the battery.
Time-to-go: The SmartShunt is able to estimate the approximate length of time that the battery will continue to support the current load, before the battery requires re-charging.
An in-depth data log also records historical data to enable the user to evaluate usage patterns and determine overall battery health. This includes values such as the highest/ lowest recorded voltages (for the main battery and auxiliary battery), deepest recorded discharge, time since last full discharge, cumulative Amp hours drawn, time since last full charge, total energy charged/discharged and many more.
Customisation
The user can set high/low thresholds for battery voltage (either battery), battery state of charge (main battery) or the battery temperature (additional sensor required). If any of the above parameters fall outside of this specified range, the battery shunt will activate an alarm on the connected mobile app.
Advanced communication
This smart battery shunt features inbuilt Bluetooth, enabling the user to wirelessly connect their mobile device to the monitor. Then, using the Victron Connect App on a smartphone or tablet, you will unlock numerous possibilities for advanced programming and remote monitoring of your battery system. A wide range of features are made available, including real-time data transmission, as well as the option to amend battery storage information, program alarms, and set up or join an existing VE.Smart network. Alternatively, the VE Direct USB Cable can be used to establish a connection to a non-Bluetooth-enabled PC/laptop.
The VictronConnect app is compatible with most mobile devices and computers, including Android and iOS smartphones, tablets, iPads, MacBooks, Windows PCs/laptops.
Compatibility
This SmartShunt is suitable for use with any 12V, 24V or 48V Lead Acid / Gel / AGM / Lithium battery or battery bank. The maximum admissible nominal current through the shunt is 2000A.

Battery ‘fuel gauge’, time-to-go indicator, and much more
The remaining battery capacity depends on the ampere-hours consumed, discharge current, temperature and the age of the battery. Complex software algorithms are needed to take all these variables into account.
Next to the basic display options, such as voltage, current and ampere-hours consumed, the BMV-700 series also displays state of charge, time to go, and power consumption in Watts.
The BMV-702 features an additional input which can be programmed to measure the voltage (of a second battery), temperature or midpoint voltage (see below).
Easy to install
All electrical connections are to the quick connect PCB on the current shunt. The shunt connects to the monitor with a standard RJ12 telephone cable. Included: RJ 12 cable (10 m) and battery cable with fuse (2 m); no other components needed.
Also included are a separate front bezel for a square or round display appearance; a securing ring for the rear mounting and screws for the front mounting.
Easy to program
A quick install menu and a detailed setup menu with scrolling texts assists the user when going through the various settings. Please consult the manual for details.
New: midpoint voltage monitoring (BMV-702 only)
This feature which is often used in industry to monitor large and expensive battery banks, is now for the first time made available at a low cost, to monitor any battery bank.
A battery bank consists of a string of series connected cells. The midpoint voltage is the voltage halfway along the string. Ideally, the midpoint voltage would be exactly half of the total voltage. In practice, however, deviations will be seen, dependent on many factors such as a different state of charge for new batteries or cells, different temperatures, internal leakage currents, capacities and much more.
Large or increasing deviation of the midpoint voltage, points to improper battery care or a failed battery or cell. Corrective action following a midpoint voltage alarm can prevent severe damage to an expensive battery. Please consult the BMV manual for more information.
